Scientists visit Queensland, Aug 2007

Professor Nigel Arnell and Dr Tim Wheeler have just returned from a visit to Brisbane, Australia, where they discussed the Walker Institute's collaboration with the Queensland Climate Change Centre of Excellence (QCCCE).

Professor Arnell said: "We are very pleased to be working with QCCCE in Australia , and our visit helped us to build the close links that will stimulate the exchange of ideas and people. The collaboration provides an opportunity for us to apply our expertise in tropical weather systems to real-world resource management problems, and to learn from resource managers about their needs for scientifically-credible information on weather and climate change".

The focus of the collaboration

In the first instance, the Walker Institute and QCCCE will be collaborating on a project to assess potential changes in Queensland 's climate over the next two decades. Later collaborations are likely to focus on impacts on water resources and crop productivity in Queensland .

Networking

Professor Arnell and Dr Wheeler also attended the 3rd Australia -New Zealand Climate Change and Business Conference, where they met with representatives of many Australian and New Zealand industries exposed to climate change. Dr Wheeler gave a presentation to the Business Conference and Professor Arnell gave a keynote talk to the first meeting of the Queensland Europe Research Collaborations Initiative .
