Scientists from the Walker Institute met with the Hon. Kate Jones, MP, Queensland Minister for Climate Change and Sustainability to discuss the latest climate-change science and its potential policy implications at state, national and global levels.
The meeting was held ahead of the Minister's trip to Copenhagen to participate in the negotiations at the UN Climate Conference.
The Minister also attended a Flood Risk Workshop.
Welcome from Prof Gordon Marshall, University of Reading VC
Vice-Chancellor Gordon Marshall welcomed the Minister to Reading and gave her a brief overview of the University's areas of academic and research excellence.
Presentations by key Walker Institute scientists
Professor Nigel Arnell presented key elements of Walker Institute science that have informed the Copenhagen meetings. Professor Arnell also provided early findings from Dr. Nicholas Klingaman's research into rainfall variability in Queensland. This work is the result of the first year of a three-year project based in the Walker Institute and funded by the Queensland Climate Change Centre of Excellence.
Professor Rowan Sutton, Director of the climate division of the National Centre for Atmospheric Science, provided the Minister with a synopsis of the University's climate modelling and analysis research, which underpins efforts to understand the regional impacts of climate change.
