Global temperature data for 2009 have just been released by the Met Office and the World Meteorological Organisation.

Last decade the warmest on record

The Met Office have announced that the last 10 years are the warmest since records began in 1850. Similar results are revealed in the independent analyses made by the United State National Climatic Data Center and NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies.

During the last 10 years temperatures have been on average 0.4 degress C warmer than the long term mean.

The results confirm that, although global temperature varies from year to year, when we look at decadal timescales we see that global temperatures are rising steadily decade by decade. The evidence shows this is very likely due to increasing greenhouse gases.

2009 amongst the 10 warmest years on record

The year 2009 is likely to rank in the top 10 warmest on record since the beginning of instrumental climate records in 1850, according to data sources compiled by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

The continuing warmth is evident in the graph below which shows annual global mean temperatures. Different research centres have looked at the temperature data independently and all show similar results.
